Trish's Statement on court's Abortion decision

Date: June 24, 2022
Issues: Abortion

Time and time again, the vast majority of Americans tell us they believe abortion is health care. Today, six unelected justices decided to take that right out of our hands, in service to the extreme GOP.

This catastrophic decision will set women and all childbearing people back five decades to a time when they were treated like second-class citizens. So long as our pregnancies are governable by the state, there can be no freedom for anyone seeking control over their own body.

While I feel devastated and violated by this decision, there is no time to mourn--only to fight back. If the extremists can take away our bodily autonomy, everything from contraception to LGBTQ+ rights will soon be on the table.

That's why I'm calling upon Congress to urgently codify abortion rights and calling upon every concerned citizen to organize and march in support of that effort. Any elected leader who lacks the courage to defend our bodies and medical privacy from Republican overreach has got to go.

Despite the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health, this issue has not been permanently decided.
